The Weather Inside the House
Round 7
Image 1 — "Beach Day at Home" : 2.75
The title promises weather and the picture delivers a wall covering. Nothing is happening: no wind stirs the palms, no sand crosses onto the rug, and the seam where the mural meets the room stays the most honest edge in the frame, which is to say the interior and the sea never once share air.
Image 4 — "Help! I'm not the Snow Queen!" : 3.40
The one comic beat in the round, and it does land: two eyes over the duvet, an entire baroque bedroom conspiring to freeze one hiding person. But the joke is carried by the exclamation mark in the title rather than by anything inside the frame, and the near-monochrome grey flattens the frost into surface decoration when it should have weight and menace.
Image 3 — "Desert storm in living room" : 3.65
Muscular, confident image-making: the funnel holds its twist all the way down to where it grinds into the dunes, and the raking backlight through the glass gives the airborne grit something to catch on. What it lacks is anyone to lose. An empty room being wrecked is a special effect; put one figure in that doorway and the identical picture becomes a story.
Image 2 — "The Comfort of Rain" : 4.05
The only entrant that grasped this theme is emotional weather, not meteorological. A private cloud has opened across the ceiling, the buckets are already positioned, the floor has turned to black mirror, and she has responded by raising an umbrella and staying in the chair. That contradiction between catastrophe and contentment is the entire picture, and the light closes the argument: cold silver falling from above, warm lamp-amber holding the room's edges, the two meeting and mixing on the flooded floor. My winner.
