Grandma Fighting a Giant Inflatable Dinosaur

Image 3 — "Grandma vs. The Inflatable Apocalypse" : 3.35
The best weapon in the round, buried under a film poster. A garden hose against an inflatable is the sharpest tactical joke anybody made — water against air — and the jet gives the picture real force, while the sunglasses tell you instantly who she is. Then the brief itself is stamped across the sky in yellow and red, eating a third of the frame and cutting across her face, so a photograph becomes an advertisement for a photograph and the one person we need to read is the one we cannot see.

Image 2 — "Get out of my yard!" : 3.55
Loud, capable, and the first thing anyone would have thought of. The leap, the impact star, the radiating sun and the clean hand-lettering are all properly done — comic art is unforgiving and this is competent comic art. But cartoon violence is the default setting for this theme, and the picture leans on its sound effects to land the blow: cover KA-POW! and the pan never quite connects, which means the drawing is being rescued by the writing.

Image 4 — "Don't Mess With Grandma" : 3.75
The only one brave enough to make it boring, and it works. Flat overcast light, a washing line, a wheelbarrow, tools left lying on the grass — this looks like something a neighbour photographed over the fence, and the dinosaur is not attacking anybody, it is simply standing there being vinyl while she commits fully to a two-handed swing. That low crouch is the best piece of acting in the round. What it gives up is any visual event: one performer, one flat light, and a composition with nowhere for the eye to travel.

Image 1 — "Braveheart" : 4.00
Everyone else drew the joke. This one changed the genre. It is painted as a Baroque battle-piece — god-rays breaking through storm cloud, a fallen banner, broken columns, the heroic diagonal — and the comedy comes entirely from granting a pool toy the gravity of a Rubens, without a single wink anywhere in it. The broom is held like a pike, her face is genuinely lit and genuinely defiant, and crucially the dinosaur stays inflatable, seams and sheen intact, because the moment it becomes a real monster the picture dies. It is also the only real paint here: glazes in the shadow, impasto where the light lands, warm skin against cold cloud. Her left hand is vague and the red passage bottom right never resolves, but this is a painting and the other three are pictures. My winner.
