Rain Made of Music

Image 3 — "A divine rain of Mozart's music" : 3.35
The red coat against wet green is the best colour decision of the round, and the face is convincingly a working musician's rather than a costume. But the picture has two halves that never meet: a miracle is falling out of the sky behind him while he looks down at his score, so nobody in the image has noticed the thing the title is about — and an instrument like that, left out in the rain, quietly argues with its own scene.

Image 4 — "A rainy music at night" : 3.60
The most restrained answer and the best-observed surface: droplets held in sharp focus over a street dissolved to bokeh, red and amber smeared along the wet road — this is exactly how rain looks through glass at night, and choosing atmosphere over spectacle takes nerve. The trouble is legibility: the notes hang in the air like little lanterns instead of falling with the rain, so at a glance it reads as a rainy window with fairy lights, and the music has to be pointed out rather than heard.

Image 2 — "Jazz rain in New Orleans" : 3.80
The most alive picture here, and the boldest camera: an aerial angle down onto a wet intersection, amber and cyan notes pouring in streaks that genuinely behave like rainfall, neon burning back off the road. Letting the weather come out of a man sitting on a cloud gives the phenomenon an author, which is more than decoration. It falls just short on finish — the player himself is the softest thing in a sharply rendered city, and his cloud belongs to a different drawing than the streets below.

Image 1 — "The Giant Invisible Piano" : 3.90
Everyone else made notes fall. This one made the rain play something. A keyboard of light lies across the whole valley, and every note that lands strikes a key and throws a ring of ripples outward — cause and effect, so the picture has a sound. The scale is handled with real discipline: mountains, a lake, a town's lights far below, and one small figure on a rock who turns spectacle into somebody's experience of it. It sits in the same cold blue a little too long and the watching silhouette is a familiar device, but this is the only entry that answered the theme with a mechanism instead of an illustration. My winner.
