Travel Poster – for a place nobody should go

Image 3 — "Incredible būt real" : 3.45
Every element shouts at the same volume — slab type, flames, a demon, two warning signs, a gate — and when everything shouts nothing is heard, because the eye finds no quiet corner in which to be frightened. The distressed print and that "ADVENTURE AWAITS?" badge show real poster instinct, and the question mark is the wittiest single mark in the round, but hell is the first place anyone thinks of for this brief, and the craft here is spent on the most obvious answer.

Image 2 — "The Blank Spot" : 3.70
The best object of the four: the poster is an old map torn open, so the erased region becomes a hole you look through, and the print texture and period lettering are handled with real authority. But the picture argues against its own caption — "erased for a reason" promises menace, and the tear reveals a lagoon, palms and a stone path, an unspoiled paradise with nothing whatever to fear, so the warning along the bottom reads as bluff.

Image 4 — "Ever never" : 3.80
The sharpest reading of the brief in the round: hell isn't fire, it's a cubicle farm receding into fog with the lights left on, and that vanishing point does more damage than any demon could. What holds it back is that it's a photograph with a title laid over it rather than a poster — the others built print objects out of paper, palette and period type, while this one leans on the caption to make it advertising, and "CUBICLE 99" sits cramped at the foot where it should land like a punchline.

Image 1 — "Room 404" : 3.90
The only entry that seduces and unsettles with the same picture. It is a genuinely beautiful mid-century poster — mint sky, coral bougainvillea, a hazy town along the coast — and the horror is smuggled in so quietly you can miss it: the door stands free, opening onto nothing but pink light, and the room number is the internet's own word for a place that does not exist. Then the little sign finishes the job — CHECK IN ANYTIME, with no mention of leaving. That is how a travel poster for somewhere nobody should go ought to work: not by warning you off, but by making the offer irresistible and letting the dread arrive on the drive home. My winner.
