The Keeper and the Whale – every full moon

Image 1 — "Whale and Keeper under the full moon" : 3.40
Everything the brief asked for, arranged exactly where you expect it: whale right, boat left, moon dead centre, and not one decision that risks anything. The rendering is clean — barnacles, the wet sheen along the jaw, the star field — but the keeper is a silhouette too small to be a person, so the encounter has scale without intimacy, and intimacy is what a meeting every full moon is actually about.

Image 2 — "Serendipity" : 3.70
The bravest surface in the round: true watercolour behaviour, bleeds running into wet paper, the whale left half-transparent and filled with stars so that animal and night sky become the same substance. What it lacks is resolve — the tail dissolves into indecision rather than intention, and the figure reads as a wizard with a staff rather than a keeper who does this every month, so the ritual the title promises never quite arrives.

Image 3 — "When the Moon Calls" : 3.80
The only entry that gave the keeper a home — lit windows on the cliff, steps cut down to the rocks, a lantern he carried out himself — and that one decision turns a spectacle into an appointment he keeps. The whale is held at a respectful distance, which is the honest choice for scale, but the picture pays for its restraint: everything sits in the same blue, so the eye finds no warmth anywhere except two small windows, and the meeting feels colder than it ought to.

Image 4 — "As seen from within" : 3.95
The one image that asked a different question. Every other entry paints the keeper looking at the whale; this turns the frame into the whale's eye and sets the whole moonlit bay — jetty, lantern, mountains, moon — inside it, so the meeting is witnessed from the animal instead of staged for us. The surface earns the idea: thick Van Gogh swirls worked into the dark skin, barnacles laid in like flowers, a night sea built from brushstrokes rather than pixels. It costs itself a little at the centre, where the reflected world goes soft exactly when you want to lean in and read it, and the eye takes a beat to resolve as an eye at all. But this is the one I would still remember tomorrow. My winner.
