Asleep in the Meadow – deep heat, long grass

Image 2 — "Blessed summer days" : 3.15
The light here is the best thing anyone made this round — a low sun coming through the seedheads so the whole frame glows from behind — but the picture keeps repeating itself, meaning the dandelion clocks are visibly the same clock stamped across the field, and once the eye catches the repetition the meadow stops being a place and becomes wallpaper. The sleeper suffers the same softness: her arm and shoulder never quite resolve into a body, so the most important thing in the picture is also its vaguest.

Image 4 — "Rabbits chilling" : 3.40
Immaculate and entirely safe — the clover, the hazed hills, the sun raking low through the grass are all handled with real competence, and there is not one moment in it you haven't already seen on a calendar. The theme said deep heat and this answers with mild pleasantness: nothing here is heavy or drowsy or overcome, just two well-lit rabbits in nice weather.

Image 1 — "Golden nap" : 3.75
The most tender frame of the four and the best-made: the rim light burning through his hair and along the dog's muzzle, the freckles, the way the two heads share one pillow of flattened grass. What holds it just short is that it arrives pre-loved — boy-and-dog-at-golden-hour is the most photographed idea in this entire aesthetic, so the picture is inheriting its warmth rather than discovering any of its own.

Image 3 — "A summer nap in the country" : 3.85
The only entrant who asked what else might be asleep in that meadow, and the answer — a woman with her cheek against a dozing cow — is worth the whole round. It is also the most disciplined colour here: sage, cream, dust and faded gold, with the far hills dissolved in haze, so the deep heat of the title is carried by the palette rather than announced by a sun flare. The craft is the shakiest of the four — the cow's muzzle sits at an odd scale, and her legs go vague where the dress meets the grass — and on a stricter day that would cost it more than it does. But this is the one image with a picture behind it instead of a look, and it's the one I still see with my eyes shut. My winner.
