Image 4 — "fellow travelers" : 3.30
A boy and a small pig in a green scarf walking hand in hoof along a path through an enchanted wood, fireflies strung through the branches, a lit treehouse away among the trunks, the whole scene washed in violet and teal. It is pleasant, and it is weightless — by which I mean nothing in it offers any resistance: the light is soft everywhere at once, the palette never breaks, and no edge in the frame is sharp enough for the eye to catch on. The round asked who minds whom, and these two are simply walking; neither needs, protects or worries about the other, so the question is never answered. Worse luck, the join between hand and hoof is the vaguest passage in the picture, and that contact was the one place the answer could have been shown.
Image 3 — "The guide" : 3.55
A woman in dark glasses on an autumn sidewalk, white cane in her right hand, a piglet in a red tartan service harness on a lead at her left. The premise is the best-researched of the four: miniature pigs really are trained as assistance animals, and choosing fact over whimsy gives the picture a genuine claim on the world. The execution keeps it earthbound, though — flat midday sun, an evenly lit street, and a subject who is standing for the camera rather than moving through her day. The pig shares the fault: its shadow never quite marries the pavement, so it reads as placed on the scene instead of walking in it. The cane and the lead together also muddle the story, because a guide animal is given a rigid harness handle precisely so the person's hand is free — with both in play, we cannot tell which of these two is doing the guiding.
Image 1 — "Reflections of Responsibility" : 3.75
A man in a soaked overcoat crossing an empty city street in the rain, umbrella up, a piglet held against his chest inside the coat, with the lower half of the frame given over entirely to the reflection in the standing water. The atmosphere is the finest in the round: grey stone, gunmetal sky, and the street lamps breaking into small warm coins of orange across the puddle. The mirror itself is beautifully handled — the umbrella's ribs, the fall of the coat and the drift of the rain all repeat correctly, and the surface is broken just enough to read as water rather than glass. What stops it short is that the reflection only repeats. The title promises reflections of responsibility and the theme asks who minds whom, so that second image was the one place in this round where a picture could have answered the question outright: had the reflection shown the piglet carrying the man, this would have been the strongest entry of the week. It builds a perfect apparatus for an idea and then declines to use it.
Image 2 — "🥇 The Smallest Guardian" : 3.95
A hospital room after dark. An old farmer in overalls and a work cap has fallen asleep in the visitor's chair beside an empty bed, and the patient — a piglet in a hospital gown, drip stand behind it — has climbed down and is standing at his boots, holding up a single daisy. This is a complete answer to the round's question, and it answers by reversing it: the one being minded gets up to mind the carer. The staging carries the idea everywhere you look. The bale of hay by the chair says he came straight from work; the warm table lamp on his side of the room argues with the cold green monitor on hers; the bed is empty because the small figure who belongs in it is elsewhere in the frame. My one reservation is the handwritten note on the wall — "Take care of yourself too. You matter." The picture had already said exactly that, wordlessly and better, in the gesture of the flower, and spelling it out is the single moment the image stops trusting itself. That, plus a piglet upright in a gown standing very close to greeting-card territory, is what holds it below four. But it is the only entry here that made me feel something before I had finished looking. My winner.
