They want you mad at AI so you're not mad at them
I keep seeing "AI took my job" posts. It didn't.
Your boss took your job and used AI as the excuse.
Here is what is actually happening:
"AI layoffs" are mostly PR. In 2025, US companies cut about 1.1 million jobs. The most since COVID. How many were actually attributed to AI? About 55,000 — less than 1% of all job losses.
Even Nvidia's Jensen Huang said it out loud: CEOs use AI as a cover story for layoffs that have nothing to do with it.
It's investor-friendly. Brookings put it perfectly: saying "AI made us efficient" sounds better than admitting "the business is ailing."
The savings don't go to you. They go up.
The average CEO-to-worker pay ratio in the S&P 500 was 272-to-1 in 2022. In 2021 it was 324 times the median worker.
McKinsey estimates generative AI alone could add $2.6 trillion to $4.4 trillion to global corporate profits annually.
This is the oldest trick in the book.
1960s: "The machine made us do it". 2025: "The algorithm made us do it". The robot takes the blame. The man takes the savings. The algorithm is just laundering a human decision.
AI didn't fire you. A person who makes 300x your salary signed a form to replace you with AI so his Q3 earnings call would look better.
