Silence is turning into a luxury product. Part 2

  1. Proper actions ✅

Quiet hours work at scale. Walmart runs sensory-friendly hours from 8 to 10 a.m. local time every day in all its U.S. and Puerto Rico stores. Radio off, lights lowered where possible, TV walls on a static image. The company said feedback from the pilot was overwhelmingly positive 🛒

No music before noon. Mornings are for coffee and thinking ☕

Kill the machine noise: self-checkout beeps, fridge door alarms, card terminal chirps, announcements for things nobody needs 🔕

Acoustic panels under tables and on ceilings. Cheap, invisible, huge effect

A quiet zone in every café, like the quiet carriage on trains 🚆

Speakerphone and video without headphones: not allowed. One sign fixes it

Measure it. A phone decibel app gives a number. A number is harder to argue with than "it feels loud" 📊

  1. Bigger picture 🔭

Silence is turning into a luxury product. Business-class lounges, noise-cancelling headphones, quiet carriages, Japanese no-talking cafés. The rich buy silence, everyone else gets the playlist 🎧💸

A café that sells quiet on purpose is selling something rarer than coffee.
