Nobody is coming to verify you
Era one: the village. You were who the community remembered you being. That system failed spectacularly and often. Martin Guerre, France 1560 - a stranger walked into a village, claimed to be a man who had left years earlier, and lived as him for years. His wife accepted him. His sisters accepted him. It took the real man walking back in to break it. Collective memory was the only ID, and collective memory was soft. 🏚️
Era two: paper. Civil registration, passports, licences, diplomas. Worth noticing how recent this is. Before 1914 you could cross most of Europe without a passport. The modern system was a wartime emergency measure that simply never got repealed. The American SSN card literally had "not for identification" printed on it, and became the de facto national ID anyway. The whole architecture we treat as ancient is roughly a century old and half of it was an accident. 📄
For many years institutions did it for you. Diploma proved you were smart. Employer proved you were legit. Bank proved you were you.
That layer is collapsing right when synthetic identity gets cheap, and nothing replaced it. So the job of proving you exist and that your history is yours has quietly moved to you personally, and almost nobody has started.
The copy problem, applied to people.
We accepted that art is copyable. We have not accepted that behaviour is. Enough of your writing, your voice, your decision patterns exist to run a version of you now.
Not soon.
Now.
The question stops being philosophical and becomes: what do you actually own that a copy doesn't?
