#4. Cash vs. Care—or Cash and Care?
The debate between UBI and UBS ultimately boils down to a fundamental question: What is freedom?
Is freedom having the purchasing power to choose your own path in a free market? Or is freedom having your basic needs guaranteed so that the market can never hold you hostage in the first place?
As automation accelerates and the cost-of-living crisis deepens, we may find that treating these ideas as enemies is a mistake. The real future of social policy might not be an either/or, but a both: a robust foundation of Universal Basic Services to keep life’s essentials affordable, paired with a modest Universal Basic Income to give people agency over the rest.
After all, a truly civil society shouldn’t force us to choose between the freedom of choice and the security of care.
